John Dinger will discuss William Marks’ involvement with polygamy and authority near and after the murder of Joseph Smith. Marks is an example of a faithful follower who did not completely accept the practice of plural marriage, which seemed to work during Smith’s life. However, that changed significantly after Smith’s death, and while it wasn’t stated publicly, polygamy was behind the discussions of succession and ultimate expulsion of Marks from Brigham Young’s church.
