Growing up in purity culture teaches people to be ashamed of and shut down the natural processes of our sexual development. From touching our own bodies, to having sexual thoughts and fantasies, to identifying as anything but cisgender or heterosexual—all of it was a “no” until we could get the elusive “temple marriage green-light go,” which is often not enough to undo the internalized shame that interrupts pleasure and loving connection.
