Description

Power and authority are central themes in the foundational narratives of Mormonism. Recent sociological theory proposes that power and authority are inherently relational, constantly created and recreated through a kind of social action that generates “epistemic capital.” Persons who effectively accumulate this capital command the recognition of others and may harness this capital to influence their actions, beliefs, and conduct. This session examines the epistemic work behind the production of authority in Mormondom and how such may inform our understanding of different Mormon communities.
