Description
This presentation will explore the Mormon Theological Paradigm—the radically distinct theology taught publicly during Joseph Smith’s lifetime. While the major Restorationist denominations (LDS, Community of Christ, Bickertonites) have rejected Joseph Smith’s heterodox theology regarding the nature of God(s), humans, and existence itself, Reform Mormonism openly embraces his theological paradigm and its implications. The Mormon Paradigm’s great strength lies in its being distinct from and even contrary to the Christian/monotheistic theological paradigm. This presentation will explore how the Mormon Paradigm can powerfully address issues of ethics, doubt, spirituality, and meaning in the 21st century.
Established in 2002, Reform Mormonism embraces the foundational Mormon concept of personal revelation being intertwined with human reason. It embraces a non-literal approach to scripture, rejecting the literalist/fundamentalist mindset as detrimental to the eternal progression of the human family. Theology is valued for establishing a paradigm for better understanding and finding meaning in life and for providing individuals and communities with concepts, stories, symbols, and a language for sharing those understandings and meanings.
