Description
Chewed gum. Licked cupcakes. A plucked flower. Historically, LDS settings such as Young Women meetings have used these “object lessons” as a metaphor for impurity. How have LDS girls and women understood and experienced these teachings about purity, and how might such expectations impact survivors of sexual violence? Drawing on context from 1890 to the present, this presentation discusses research on the mutual embeddedness of purity and gender-based violence. The research involves current and former LDS women, of whom 42% described a direct experience with gender-based violence.
