Description

Trauma can deeply impact individuals, leading them to adopt various coping mechanisms to numb or evade intense emotions linked to unresolved trauma. Some of these mechanisms may include behaviors traditionally categorized as “sins,” such as smoking, drinking, substance abuse, gambling, and compulsive sexual behaviors. Conversely, trauma survivors may adopt “saintly” behaviors, such as exact obedience, pleasing others excessively, seeking external perfection, and over-functioning in callings, work, and home. By recognizing the signs of trauma in oneself and others, we can learn healthier ways to support those affected by trauma, moving away from judgment of the “sinner” and idealization of the “saint.”
