The high profile of politicians such as Mitt Romney, and Harry Reid (D-NV), Senate Minority Leader, combined with the LDS Church’s involvement in California’s 2008 Proposition 8, and the Church’s influence on Utah’s new immigration laws, followed by a still more recent declaration of political neutrality and subsequent encouragement to Utah Latter-day Saints that they attend their state caucuses, have all highlighted a core LDS principle: Mormons should be good citizens and participate in the political process as much as possible. The most fundamental way to participate in the political process is to register to vote and go to the polls. In the LDS Church, leaders are expected to set an example. This presentation will examine the level of political involvement and general voting habits of LDS general authorities, stake presidents, and bishops in central Utah.
