2023 Summer Symposium

July 27-29, Sandy, Utah

[MAIN] STREAMING MORMONISM

The many branches of the Mormon movement have always struggled between wanting to be independent and wanting to be mainstream. With the recent proliferation of streaming television productions, including Murder among the Mormons, Sister Wives, and Mormon No More, is Mormonism being drawn into the mainstream, or pushed further to the fringes?

It seems that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is making a concerted effort to push into the Christian mainstream, distancing itself from the word Mormon and removing LDS-specific artwork from its temples and chapels. But is it pushing for independence in other ways?

This conference will focus on how various branches and leaders of the Restoration movement have sought the fringes or courted the mainstream, and how the outside world—especially the media—has helped or hindered their efforts. Analyses of current streaming media are especially encouraged.
