Freedom, Resilience, Empowerment and Newfound Identity

For many years, Elissa, who had been raised within the FLDS to believe that marriage was the pinnacle of a woman’s achievement, was routinely raped and sexually assaulted by her husband. By the age of 17, she had suffered miscarriages and a stillborn child. At her lowest point, she attempted suicide. What she couldn’t know is that through an act of bravery and escape, she would end up taking down cult leader Warren Jeffs and starting a ripple of change that would forever change and liberate the FLDS. After her liberation, she returned to her community and now leads change and empowerment for her people. This presentation will discuss the lessons she’s learned about embracing an identity in and out of her religious community.
