Insights Toward Understanding Homosexuality: A Father’s Journey

In a discussion with my college-aged son during the 2004 election debates on gay marriage, I was shocked when he expressed sympathy for gay marriage, and I argued against it. Six months later, our family learned that our oldest son is gay. This sent us on a journey to understand the complexity of homosexuality. “Insights toward Understanding Homosexuality” focuses on six key topics: 1) Same Gender Attraction is Not a Choice; 2) It’s Not Just about Sex; 3) Scriptural Interpretation Must Account for Cultural Influences; 4) Like Us, Our Leaders Are Human; 5) Gay Marriage is Not a Threat to Traditional Families; 6) Understanding Mental Health Aspects.

About Sunstone

Sunstone is a magazine published by the Sunstone Education Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, that discusses Mormonism through scholarship, art, short fiction, and poetry.

Please consider supporting Sunstone by making a donation.

Sunstone is a forum for examining and expressing the rich spiritual, intellectual, social, and artistic aspects of history and contemporary life across the Mormon movement. We maintain our publications and recordings on this website so that each new generation can explore and interrogate the past’s effect on Mormon communities and cultures. Please be aware that some presenters and historical figures included in this content may have troubling histories of prejudice, criminal activity, violence, and abuse—sexual or otherwise. To ensure the integrity of the historical record and to provide a way for our community to learn from the past, we will not remove problematic content or presenters from our archives.

Mission

The mission of The Sunstone Education Foundation is to sponsor open forums of Mormon thought and experience.

We examine and express the rich spiritual, intellectual, social, and artistic qualities of Mormon history and contemporary life. We encourage humanitarian service, honest inquiry, and responsible interchange of ideas that is respectful of all people and what they hold sacred.
