He is the author of Joseph Smith: The Rise and Fall of an American Prophet, published by Yale University Press in June 2025. His other books include Brigham Young: Pioneer Prophet; The Mormon Jesus: A Biography; and They Knew They Were Pilgrims: Plymouth Colony and the Contest for American Liberty.
