In the last decade, a very old argument has gained support among members of the Utah-based LDS tradition: Joseph Smith never practiced polygamy. These “polygamy-deniers,” “-skeptics,” “-truthers,” or “monogamy-affirmers” are largely dismissed by professional and amateur historians from across the Mormon spectrum. In this session, independent scholar Mary Ann Clements will present the shortcomings of historical “proof” of Joseph’s polygamy that has long been accepted uncritically. Those who believe Joseph Smith practiced polygamy need to account for these shortcomings to defend the traditional narrative.
