On November 5, 2015, a policy change in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Handbook of Instructions was leaked online. The policy automatically branded married Latter-day Saint same-sex couples as apostates and excluded their children from receiving a name and a blessing or baptism until they turned eighteen.
From a queer perspective, the exclusion policy is best understood in three acts:
• The politics of same-sex marriage and the aftermath of California Prop 8: 2008–2015
• The enactment and execution of the policy: 2015–2019
• The recension of the policy and its lingering consequences: 2019–present
Nathan Kitchen was an eye-witness to all three acts. A gay father of five children who came out during California’s Prop 8, his little family was caught in the crosshairs of the exclusion policy. In addition, he was a senior leader in Affirmation: LGBTQ Mormons, Families & Friends during Act Two and the president of Affirmation during Act Three. In this session, Nathan will draw from his unique leadership experiences chronicled in his memoir The Boughs of Love: Navigating the Queer Latter-day Saint Experience During an Ongoing Restoration to give a queer-centric look at the personal and institutional aspects of each act in the exclusion policy saga.
