Description

In historically non-Christian cultures, women are valued for their ability to bear children, as a source of household labor, and to provide sexual pleasure to men. Men are valued for their dominance, wealth, and authority over other men. The teachings of Jesus, however, turn these cultural notions completely upside down (and are the basis of my ministry, which teaches biblically-based gender equality in Africa and India).

In this session, I will lay out the New Testament verses in which Jesus raises up women and which (in the words of a ministry partner of mine in Burundi), “frees men from the burden of thinking that they are little kings.” We will look at how Jesus’ freedoms challenge those of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, delve into whether the two systems can be reconciled, and explore ways in which members can cope if they cannot.
